On December 8, 2004, while performing with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, Dimebag Darrell Abbott was shot and killed onstage by Nathan Gale. Abbott was shot a total of four times, at point-blank range in the back of the head. He was 38 years old.

Three others were killed in the shooting: concert attendee Nathan Bray, 23 of Columbus; club employee Erin Halk, 29 of northwest Columbus; and Damageplan security guard Jeff "Mayhem" Thompson, 40 of Texas. The band's drum technician, John "Kat" Brooks, and tour manager, Chris Paluska, were also injured.

Dimebag Darrell is buried at the Moore Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, Texas.

He was the ray of sunshine. Dime will never die ever -- he's in my veins. He's sitting at God's tavern, having a cold one with Randy Rhoads and Hendrix. Dime was an original.

"He will truly be missed. Dime was one of the first people to show Slipknot respect as a band and that meant so much because we all looked up to him. I remember all the good times I was able to spend with him over the years from tearing it up at the Ritz Carlton playing our version of WWF wrestling with Joey (Jordison) and Bobby Tongs to getting drunk with the outlaw at noon. He was there for me when I was going through struggles and problems in my life, always willing to listen and give me good advice. He was a good friend and I will miss him greatly. My condolences go out to Vinnie, Rita and the entire Abbott Family."

This is unbelievable. To sit here and talk about Darrell in the past tense seems so wrong, so unfair, so unjust, I don't even know what to say. My heart goes out to Vinnie, to their families, to the other band members, and to the families and friends of the other people that were killed or injured, in this fucking senseless act of selfishness and stupidity.

In 1985 I was fortunate enough to meet both Darrell and his brother in Dallas on tour. The first thing me and my friend did as soon as that tour was over, was to head straight back to Dallas and hang out with Darrell and Vinnie for a long time, cuz they were the coolest muther fuckers that we had met after criss-crossing the states for three months. That was the beginning of a friendship that was anchored in love, respect, fun, outrageousness, music, booze, sweat, late nights, early mornings, hangovers, headaches, pounding eardrums, sore bodies... the list goes on.

There's a tendency in these fucked up moments to use the word "I" a lot and focus on one's own feelings of pity and shock... so instead let it just be known that thru these eyes Darrell was incredibly warm, open, fun, nutty, forthcoming, talented, embracing, unpretentious, accommodating and he always had a very attractive innocence about him that obviously made him never threatening and always welcoming.

Darrell and his brother were the cornerstone of musical adventures that were always groundbreaking, pushing boundaries, challenging to themselves and to their fans, respected by their peers and always true musicians' musicians, and today the rock world is worse off because of this untimely and senseless waste.

Much love and respect and thanks for letting me be a small part of your life and I know you are already having fun and throwing it down with Bon Scott, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Jimi, Cliff B., and the rest of the musicians and troublemakers that you are hanging with so prematurely.

Former Soul Coughing frontman Mike Doughty [ tickets ] has a new solo album in the can and will preview material from the set during a monthlong tour that will get the audience involved.

Doughty will launch "The Question Jar Show" trek Nov. 2 at the South Padre International Music Festival in Texas and then move on to US clubs from coast to coast as well as Vancouver.

The singer/songwriter will perform as a duo with multi-instrumentalist Andrew Livingston. Besides introducing new music, Doughty will play requests yelled from the audience and answer questions that fans drop into a jar. No question will be considered too weird and no topic taboo, according to a press release.

When he's not playing music, Doughty writes poetry, plays and blogs (which can be found at his website), and he's also a photographer.

Duran Duran [ tickets ] will take over Broadway's legendary Barrymore Theatre for nine days next month to preview material from its forthcoming album, "Red Carpet Massacre."

The New York City run, which kicks off Nov. 1, marks the first time that any band has embarked on such an extended stay in a Broadway theater, according to a press release. Duran Duran will take the stage for more than two hours each night, performing "Red Carpet Massacre" in its entirety, as well as a number of its classics.

"Falling Down," the Timberlake-produced lead single from "Red Carpet Massacre," is streaming at Duran Duran's MySpace page.

BAD BRAINS BUILD A COMEBACK ALBUM

Legendary punk band Bad Brains (tickets | music) is set to return with several live appearances and a new album, the band's first studio release since a dub-influenced effort in 2002.

"Build a Nation," set for a June 26 release, is the first fruit from the Bad Brains' recently announced deal with the Megaforce label, which billed the set in a press release as the "first proper Bad Brains studio album in over a decade." The disc was produced by Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys and features all of the group's original members: HR, Darryl Jenifer, Dr. Know and Earl Hudson.

The Deftones are still rocking their latest album, "Saturday Night Wrist," around the United States. But they've already started work on its successor, too. Frontman Chino Moreno tells Billboard.com that the Sacramento, Calif.-based quintet has set up a backstage writing room where they're creating new material.

Moreno says that with just a couple of songs in motion, it's too early to predict what the new album will sound like -- or when it will be recorded and released.

Moreno is also moving on a second album by his other band, Team Sleep, which he says is nearly finished and should be out in early 2008.

1) KISS “ALIVE” Before discovering Kiss I was not really into music. I was very young and all I knew of music was what my parents listened to (mostly Elvis) and whatever pop song was on the radio. I remember going to the drug store (there was no record store in my town, the drug store had a small music section) and staring at the cover photo and thinking “this is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.” I saved my allowance money for two weeks and purchased the record. After that Kiss was my life.
They were all I thought about. I wanted to be Paul Stanley. I started my first band shortly after that. We called ourselves Black Diamond and played all Kiss songs.

HELLYEAH has announced an April 2007 release date for their self- titled debut on Epic Records. The highly anticipated release features MUDVAYNE lead singer Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett, former PANTERA drummer Vinnie Paul and NOTHINGFACE guitarist Tom Maxwell and bassist Jerry Montano.

The quintet includes three of hard rock’s most revered and valuable players, with careers highlighted by an astonishing run of chart- topping gold and platinum albums, major industry awards, critical acclaim, Grammy nominations and music of monolithic power. The March 2006 issue of REVOLVER magazine features a cover story that hails the band as “the ultimate metal super group.”

“Tom, Jerry and I have been talking about working together ever since we staggered through the streets of New Orleans five years ago,” says Mudvayne/HELLYEAH vocalist Chad "Helvis" Gray. "I mentioned it to Greg and he immediately wanted in, and when Vinnie came on board the whole thing just took on a life of its own. This was a must-do project for all of us.”

“The guys from HELLYEAH and the incredible music we’ve created have brought me back to what I love,” states Vinnie. “HELLYEAH is the best record I’ve collaborated on since Vulgar Display of Power. The vibe is ‘positive with a kick-your-ass-attitude.’ I can’t wait to take this band on tour.”

One of the most important and influential bands in the history of hard music, Pantera is credited with being a dominant influence in the sound and style of today’s metal. Co-founded with his brother, the late guitarist Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott, Vinnie Paul and their band mates sold over 14 million records worldwide. Pantera’s rise to metal fame was catapulted by the release of 1990’s Cowboys from Hell. Vulgar Display of Power followed and with it, brought the band star status and domination in the hard rock/metal music community for a decade. The band received four Grammy nominations and a platinum sales award for The Great Southern Trendkill and Cowboys From Hell and double platinum kudos for Far Beyond Driven, which debuted at Number One on the Billboard album chart. The band’s final studio effort was 2000’s Reinventing the Steel.

Darrell and Vinnie went on to form Damageplan, releasing New Found Power in 2003. During a Damageplan performance in Columbus, Ohio, on December 8, 2004, Dimebag was fatally shot at the age of 38. In May of 2006, Vinnie’s record label, Big Vin Records, officially opened for business with the release of both a CD, Rebel Meets Rebel and DVD, Dimevision Volume 1. That's The Fun I Have. The DVD debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top DVD Sales Chart has been certified gold in both the United States and Canada.

Nothingface guitarist Tom Maxwell has been a member of the band since its inception, while bassist Jerry Montano joined the group in late 2005. Nothingface has performed on both the Ozzfest and Tattoo The Earth tours, as well as sharing the bill with bands such as Disturbed, Pantera, Mudvayne and Ministry. After two records for DCide, 1997's "Pacifier" and 1998's "An Audio Guide to Everyday Atrocity", Nothingface made its major label debut on TVT Records with 2000's "Violence", and 2002's "Skeletons" to critical acclaim.

Gray and Tribbett will tour in support of the HELLYEAH debut in between recording the much-anticipated new Mudvayne album. The follow-up to 2004’s blockbuster release, Lost and Found, which debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Top 200, is due this fall and finds the Grammy-nominated quartet working once again with producer Dave Fortman (Evanescence, Superjoint Ritual).

Lost And Found was Mudvayne’s third consecutive gold-selling album and featured the blockbuster hit, “Happy?” – a track that held the No. 1 spot at Active Rock Radio for ten consecutive weeks and was the overall #1 rock song for 2005 with over 50,000 plays. In addition, fans voted the song’s companion clip the No. 1 “Headbangers Ball” video of 2005. Of course, that was just part of the Mudvayne success story. The group also earned its first-ever Grammy nomination in the "Best Metal Performance" category for "Determined," the first song issued from Lost And Found.

“It's cool to have both Mudvayne and HELLYEAH as creative outlets now, even though the approach, subject matter, and attitudes between the two projects are completely different,” says Gray. “I'm looking forward to balancing both bands in my life—my new extremely busy life.”

JUCIFER have debuted the first video for the track "Pontius of Palia" from their acclaimed new album If Thine Enemy Hunger exclusively on YouTube.com.

The video was shot with producer/director Marc Pilvinsky of Bare Ruined Films in the duo's hometown of Athens, GA. Pilvinsky previously lensed the band's "When She Goes Out" video from the I Name You Destroyer full-length.

Additionally, JUCIFER has announced several more tour dates to their never-ending tour of North America. The band will be touring the Southern U.S. during the winter months, including stops in their native Georgia.

About THE FAMILY VALUES TOUR:
The first trek launched September 22, 1998 with a bill headlined by KORN and with performances from Rammstein, Ice Cube, Limp Bizkit and Orgy. 1999's line-up featured headliners Limp Bizkit, along with Filter, The Crystal Method, Primus, Staind, Mobb Deep, Ja Rule, and Method Man & Redman. KORN also made surprise appearances at a few dates. Beyond the live touring aspect, the debut outing of The Family Values Tour spawned a gold-certified live album and platinum-certified companion home video. Atlanta's MASTODON have officially completed work on their third album, "Blood Mountain", due this fall via the band's new label, Warner Bros. The album's cover artwork was posted online on the band's official web site as an interactive puzzle, where the pieces must be dragged and dropped to create the cover. Check it out at this location.

"Blood Mountain" is being recorded with Seattle-based producer Matt Bayles (ISIS, HORSE THE BAND). The CD was mixed in New York by Rich Costey (AUDIOSLAVE, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE). Slayer (tickets/music), which later this week will launch its previously delayed summer tour, has nailed down an Aug. 8 release date for its new album, "Christ Illusion."

The new disc is Slayer's first studio set since 2001's "God Hates Us All," and is the first to feature the band's original lineup--Tom Araya (vocals, bass), Kerry King (guitar), Jeff Hanneman (guitar) and Dave Lombardo (drums)--since 1990's "Seasons in the Abyss." Josh Abraham (Korn, Velvet Revolver) produced the set, and Rick Rubin was the album's executive producer. The disc will be released on Slayer's longtime label, Rubin's American Recordings...

LOS ANGELES — Eight years after creating and headlining the inaugural Family Values Tour, Korn are relaunching the traveling festival this summer with co-headliners the Deftones.

Rounding out the mainstage lineup will be Stone Sour, Flyleaf and Dir En Gray, who Davis described as "this crazy Japanese band that are just out of their minds."

"We haven't toured with [the Deftones] since '97 or '96, and we're really excited," Davis said. "We love those guys. We started out together. Literally it was us and them, and back in the day we used to drive to Sacramento [California] and play at their home clubs. And they would drive to Huntington Beach and play the clubs we'd play, so we've been friends for a long, long time, and it's cool to be back together again and sharing the same stage."

And the feelings are mutual, according to Deftones singer Chino Moreno.

"We've had a crazy relationship because we've always distanced ourselves from Korn so we could be our own band," Moreno said. "Their first record came out before ours, so it was always like we were following in their footsteps. And I think we had to do that, and now it's time to just have fun. We don't care so much about that stuff anymore. We just want to play with friends."

Moreno also confirmed Davis' promise that their bands will be performing their collaboration "Wicked" onstage together. "There's a bunch of cool stuff I want to do," Moreno said.

Deftones will be using the tour to debut new material from their fifth studio album, due in September...

Following last year's monthly television series Henry's Film Corner, the all new THE HENRY ROLLINS SHOW premiered on the Independent Film Channel (IFC) Saturday, April 1 at 10pm ET.

MTV.com is reporting that Atlanta-based metallers MASTODON are putting the finishing touches on their third album, "Blood Mountain", with Seattle-based producer Matt Bayles (ISIS, HORSE THE BAND). Commented drummer Bränn Dailor: "It's hard to be inside something and talk to people about it. And it's kind of a cliché that the people in the band think that what they're working on at the moment is the best stuff they've ever done. But I guess that's the way that we feel. It's just more intense, more — I mean I like everything we've ever done. But at the moment, I'm really digging on this stuff. It's hard for me to put into words what's different about it. It's just better."

"I hope we can start a prog revolution, because the timing's right," he added. "You've got a TOOL record that's coming out, an Isis record that's coming out, a MARS VOLTA record that's coming out, a MASTODON record that's coming out, and I hope that converges into something really awesome for music where it doesn't become pop, but there's a little more sharing of the pie. It would be cool if you had kids in their bedrooms not trying to learn LINKIN PARK songs, but they're trying to learn MASTODON songs. It's cool music that's honest and from the heart, and it's technically challenging."

Just then, "this snow queen appears before him and tells him it's OK to start eating his own flesh. And then he starts to do that. Then an aurora borealis appears, and he thinks it's God, and it starts affecting this crystal skull he's been toting up the mountain, and it starts to warm his body. That, coupled with the knowledge of the aurora borealis being God, gives him the strength to start to carry on again." - I wonder if they spend more time writing the music, or inventing wacky stories to go with it.

Def Leppard, Journey rock together this summer

Veteran rockers Def Leppard (tickets | music) and Journey (tickets | music) are teaming up for a two-month summer tour, and tickets for many of the shows will hit the box office this weekend.

The two five-man outfits launch the run on the East Coast in late June, and will work their way through about 30 cities before wrapping things up in the Pacific Northwest at the end of August.

Def Leppard and Journey are both members of an exclusive list of artists who have seen at least one of their albums get certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America, signifying sales of 10 million copies. Leppard accomplished that feat with 1983's "Pyromania" and 1987's "Hysteria," while Journey scored the award for its 1988 best-of set, "Journey: Greatest Hits.

LG: As you mentioned working on the new album, I was wondering if there's a chance of any new material being performed on this tour?
SC: Yeah, we're going to play some new stuff.

LG: Can you give any hints as to how the new material is shaping up as? I've already read it's a little more aggressive, but to what extent?
SC: I can't apply more aggressive to any of it. I think that's funny when people say that. I wish. Hey, I personally wish it was more aggressive.

LG: I think that was in an interview with Chino.
SC: Yeah well, more aggressive for him, maybe. If we busted out some blastbeats and double bass, then I'd definitely be glad to take it to the next level, but that's asking too much right now.

On-again off-again Limp Bizkit (music) guitarist Wes Borland (music) says he's finished with the group for the foreseeable future, and is dumping his energy into his new project, Black Light Burns.

Borland has been working on "Cruel Melody," the debut album from Black Light Burns. In addition to Borland--who has been handling vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards and programming--the lineup also features former Nine Inch Nails member Danny Lohner (producer, guitar, bass, keys, programming), Telefon Tel Aviv's Josh Eustis (engineer, programming, keys, sound design), and A Perfect Circle/Nine Inch Nails drummer Josh Freese.
